However, her plan doesn’t quite work, and life continues as always. Peril: There isn’t a whole lot of peril or danger in this story, although a goddess is trying to conquer the world. There is also a slightly more extreme love story going on, slightly in the background, of a god and a woman. She also goes through some difficulties with a group of girls in her class, and they oftentimes say mean things to them. This is just “little kid love” though, nothing serious (they’re all 12 years old or younger). Relationships: Juliet is suddenly faced with all sorts of boys wanting her attention, and most of the boys want to be her boyfriend. It also shows that while many girls want a boy to fall in love with them, they usually aren’t ready for that kind of attention. This book also shows how people often misunderstand each other, when they really could just be friends. Bruce Coville must have done some research before writing this novel, as the Greek myths inside are surprisingly accurate. Positive Elements: Juliet Dove, Queen of Love is a very interesting book, if not slightly strange. She discovers that this is all the amulet’s fault. Little does she know the effects of this magical necklace, as boys all over her school are suddenly falling in love with her. The woman gives Juliet a beautiful necklace, which she just can’t resist. Summary: Juliet is a very shy girl, and after being teased by a few girls in her class, she stumbles upon a magic shop and a strange woman. I think if I had been reading it, I would have put it down before I got to the good part, I am sorry to say.Setting: Modern times and the ancient world of the gods. The full-cast recording is nice, although one of the rats has a very annoying high-pitched voice.

I was nonplussed by this book until I got about halfway through and discovered that the plot had a lot to do with gods and goddesses. With the help of a couple of enchanted rats, Juliet must break the spell that the necklace has put on her. Juliet discovers that the locket she's been given was previously owned by Helen of Troy, there's some powerful magic at work in it, and she can't take it off. Then she notices all the boys at school seem suddenly smitten with her. First, her best friend Arturo seems to be paying more attention to her looks and he's saying strange things to her. But when she puts it on, she discovers something strange happening.

When the lady at the shop gives it to her, Juliet is surprised, but pleased. One day when running away from two girls at school, Juliet finds herself at the Magic Shop and she's drawn to a beautiful amulet.

So shy, in fact, that she uses sharp words to keep others from paying attention to her (which is how she's earned the nickname "Killer"). Although no one at school would believe it, she's painfully shy.
